In an effort to reduce the potential for serious forklift accidents employers should take the following steps: only allow properly trained operators to use forklifts always adequately maintain forklifts and always keep the areas where forklifts operate free of excess items people and obstructions. Fellow workers can further contribute to safety by: performing routine checks of the forklift not operating the forklift unless authorized by the company making sure loads are not too heavy and properly stacked never using the forklift to transport people not using the forklift in place of a ladder or other type of scaffolding being aware of the stability of the vehicle and being aware of their personal surroundings such as other people uneven floors floor surfaces power lines corners loading dock locations doorway heights etc. Furthermore OSHA requires all operators to be at least eighteen years old.
Industrial fork lift trucks are divided into two categories: electric and internal combustion (IC). Forklift engine types determine how the forklift operates where it can be used (indoor or outdoor) weight capacity and overall performance. Powered by lead-acid batteries several types of forklifts are electric: cushion tire forklifts scissor lifts order pickers stackers reach trucks and pallet jacks. Electric forklifts are primarily used indoors on flat even surfaces. The initial cost of an electric forklift tends to be higher than most IC fork lifts but its annual fuel and maintenance cost is less expensive over time. Electric lift truck batteries last 6 consecutive hours or throughout an 8-hour shift with 2-3 breaks. The charge of the battery determines the strength of the lift: a fully charged forklift operates at its fullest capacity while a low charge slows its performance.
Electric ones run off a battery that is charged overnight. A fully charged battery can keep a forklift running for about 6 consecutive hours. If your warehouse only works 8 hours you will find that keeping your battery fully charged will enable you to keep your forklift running the entire shift. Unless you run the forklift for 6 hours straight you will find that your forklifts battery should be enough to keep the forklift running. You can always purchase a secondary battery if your forklift needs to run for more than 8 hours. Another reason that you should consider purchasing an electric forklift is that you will be doing much less damage to the environment than you would by using a gas forklift. Even gas forklifts that use the much cleaner propane gas will still release emissions into the air but an electric forklift will be much cleaner. Seeing as no gas is burned there are no emissions released to contaminate the air. Charging the battery will be easy and you will find that your electric forklift is the most eco-friendly vehicle in your warehouse.
Lack of Proper Maintenance: Failing to service the major components of the forklift such as the steering brakes hydraulic parts or the transmission can lead to an accident. Unreasonable Work Pace: Setting a work pace that is too high or creating a stressful work environment can lead to workers rushing which increases the chances of an accident. Lack of Safety Devices: Removing safety devices or having safety devices that are not properly functioning can be a recipe for disaster. For example if the forklifts rollover protection is not engaged or not functioning correctly the operator can be thrown from the machine or pinned underneath if it should over turn.
