The benefits of purchasing a gas diesel or LPG forklift include: -Ability to work after a quick refuel compared to hours of battery charging. -Capable of reaching faster top and acceleration speeds on most surfaces. -Built to be more durable and can withstand abuse of towing loads. -Lower initial purchasing cost and Longer Engine life. With so many moving parts ICE forklifts may have higher maintenance and servicing costs. Other disadvantages to purchasing and ICE forklift include: -Not suitable for indoor use without ventilation. -Many trucks dont have a fuel gauge showing the operator how much fuel is left often time resulting in running out of gas without notice. -There is also a cost for securely storing gasoline diesel and liquid propane gasoline near your business.
IC forklifts have a better performance rate than electric forklifts for high capacity loads over 20000 lbs. While the initial cost of internal combustion forklifts is lower than electric these forklifts require more routine maintenance and higher fuel prices. With skyrocketing gas prices and the "Go Green" movement forklift brands like Toyota Mitsubishi Linde and Yale are developing fuel alternatives in an effort to manufacture an "eco-friendly forklift" reduce the carbon footprint of the industrial sector. The development of natural gas and hydrogen fuel cells has been their main focus for the last three years. The number one type of forklift accident resulting in death is from forklifts tipping over. These types of accidents make up nearly twenty-six percent of all serious injuries from forklifts and nearly twenty-five percent of all forklift fatalities. The main cause of forklifts tipping over is overloading the machine with material that is to be moved. This is also the most common cause of accidents that occur due to falling material from forklifts with is the third most common form of forklift accident. Ensuring proper load limits on forklifts could greatly reduce the total number of workplace accidents; however there are many other reasons for forklift accidents. These accidents can be a result of many factors that are operational behavioral mechanical or organizational.
Poor Workplace Setup: Operating a forklift in conditions such as crowded aisles or in areas where there are visual obstructions or high amounts of foot traffic and noise can lead to forklift accidents. Load Issues: Load issues such as those that exceed the stated weight limits or picking up loads of poorly stacked or unstable pallets can lead to the load falling or the forklift tipping. Because of these reasons the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has developed a clear set of guidelines for training forklift operators. On top of mandating proper training for forklift operators employers should also make sure proper safety practices are in place when forklifts are in operation on a job site. This means keeping the operating environment safe for all employees along with providing proper equipment maintenance.
