Industrial fork lift trucks are divided into two categories: electric and internal combustion (IC). Forklift engine types determine how the forklift operates where it can be used (indoor or outdoor) weight capacity and overall performance. Electric forklifts are primarily used indoors on flat even surfaces. The initial cost of an electric forklift tends to be higher than most IC fork lifts but its annual fuel and maintenance cost is less expensive over time. Electric lift truck batteries last 6 consecutive hours or throughout an 8-hour shift with 2-3 breaks. The charge of the battery determines the strength of the lift: a fully charged forklift operates at its fullest capacity while a low charge slows its performance.
Having to charge a battery causes the inactivity of a forklift and can be inefficient in the event of a power outage or forgotten charge.-Charging stations typically require large areas taking away extra pallet space. -The tires on electric forklifts are not made for rocky and heavy duty floor surfaces. - Forklift batteries require attention when charging charging when a battery is half full or running a forklift on an empty battery can lower the life of the battery. Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) Forklifts These forklifts are separated into diesel and liquid propane gasoline (LPG) engines. Both have the same indoor/outdoor functionality and have the highest maximum capacity of forklifts. Manufactures also sell ICE trucks which are typically used for heavy duty types of lifting.
Poor Workplace Setup: Operating a forklift in conditions such as crowded aisles or in areas where there are visual obstructions or high amounts of foot traffic and noise can lead to forklift accidents. Load Issues: Load issues such as those that exceed the stated weight limits or picking up loads of poorly stacked or unstable pallets can lead to the load falling or the forklift tipping. Because of these reasons the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has developed a clear set of guidelines for training forklift operators. On top of mandating proper training for forklift operators employers should also make sure proper safety practices are in place when forklifts are in operation on a job site. This means keeping the operating environment safe for all employees along with providing proper equipment maintenance.
In an effort to reduce the potential for serious forklift accidents employers should take the following steps: only allow properly trained operators to use forklifts always adequately maintain forklifts and always keep the areas where forklifts operate free of excess items people and obstructions. Fellow workers can further contribute to safety by: performing routine checks of the forklift not operating the forklift unless authorized by the company making sure loads are not too heavy and properly stacked never using the forklift to transport people not using the forklift in place of a ladder or other type of scaffolding being aware of the stability of the vehicle and being aware of their personal surroundings such as other people uneven floors floor surfaces power lines corners loading dock locations doorway heights etc. Furthermore OSHA requires all operators to be at least eighteen years old.
