The number one type of forklift accident resulting in death is from forklifts tipping over. These types of accidents make up nearly twenty-six percent of all serious injuries from forklifts and nearly twenty-five percent of all forklift fatalities. The main cause of forklifts tipping over is overloading the machine with material that is to be moved. This is also the most common cause of accidents that occur due to falling material from forklifts with is the third most common form of forklift accident. Ensuring proper load limits on forklifts could greatly reduce the total number of workplace accidents; however there are many other reasons for forklift accidents. These accidents can be a result of many factors that are operational behavioral mechanical or organizational.
3. Towing Finally you can use a forklift on a farm to not only lift and move items but also tow (pull or drag) them. Towing would be used for objects or loads that are too big or too heavy to be lifted by the forklift safely. Forklifts can be used to tow trailers tractors other vehicles machinery large and/or very heavy pieces of equipment and very large loads. Keep in mind that proper procedures and safety precautions need to be followed in order to prevent damage to the forklift to prevent damage to the large items being towed and to prevent accident and injury. For example proper tow ropes must be used but they should never be attached to the mast to pull or drag loads. In addition appropriate attachments must be fitted and used in order for the forklift to be used for towing or pushing safely.
Electric ones run off a battery that is charged overnight. A fully charged battery can keep a forklift running for about 6 consecutive hours. If your warehouse only works 8 hours you will find that keeping your battery fully charged will enable you to keep your forklift running the entire shift. Unless you run the forklift for 6 hours straight you will find that your forklifts battery should be enough to keep the forklift running. You can always purchase a secondary battery if your forklift needs to run for more than 8 hours. Another reason that you should consider purchasing an electric forklift is that you will be doing much less damage to the environment than you would by using a gas forklift. Even gas forklifts that use the much cleaner propane gas will still release emissions into the air but an electric forklift will be much cleaner. Seeing as no gas is burned there are no emissions released to contaminate the air. Charging the battery will be easy and you will find that your electric forklift is the most eco-friendly vehicle in your warehouse.
Even with all of these guidelines in place and plenty of training programs available employers are not required to take part. That being said employers who do not follow OSHAs guidelines run the risk of opening themselves up to liability claims and lawsuits should an employee become injured from a forklift accident. Some states even allow injured employees to seek damages beyond those provided by workers compensation benefits. This means that the employer who failed to verify a safe workplace could be held accountable as well as the forklift manufacturer and any subcontractors or owner of the jobsite property. If you or someone you know has been injured from a forklift accident it is important that you seek the advice of a personal injury attorney who specializes in the area of construction accidents. You may be entitled to receive monetary damages for your injuries and a skilled attorney will help you to assess the validity of your case.
